A laptop with 4 GB of RAM can still be useful, but modern Windows and web browsers use a lot of memory. The steps below start with free fixes and end with upgrades that make the biggest difference.
Quick answer
Disable startup apps, limit browser tabs, free disk space,
and if the laptop still has a hard drive, replace it with an SSD. That upgrade
usually makes the biggest difference.
Free fixes
1. Disable startup apps
Open Task Manager → Startup apps and disable what you don’t
need. Fewer background programs means more free memory.
2. Control your browser
- Keep
only a few tabs open.
- Remove
browser extensions you don’t use.
- Use
your browser’s built-in sleeping tabs or memory saver option if it has
one.
3. Uninstall programs you don’t use
Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps and remove old
software, trial programs and toolbars.
4. Free up disk space
Keep at least 15% of the drive free. Use Storage Sense and
delete temporary files as described in our guide on freeing space on the C:
drive.
5. Reduce visual effects
Turn off Transparency effects in Settings →
Personalization → Colors, and choose Adjust for best performance in
System Properties → Advanced → Performance Settings.
6. Scan for unwanted software
Run a full scan with Windows Security. Unwanted programs and
adware can use a lot of resources.
Upgrades that make a real difference
7. Replace the hard drive with an SSD
If your laptop has a traditional hard drive, an SSD makes
startup, app launching and everyday use much faster. It’s usually the best
upgrade for an older laptop. Back up your files first, and check your model’s
guide for compatible drives.
8. Add more RAM if possible
Some laptops let you upgrade to 8 GB, while others have RAM
soldered to the board. Look up your exact model before buying anything.
9. Start fresh
If the laptop has years of clutter, back up your files and
use Reset this PC → Remove everything for a clean Windows installation.
